System of a Down (commonly referred to as System or abbreviated as SOAD) is an Armenian-American rock band, formed in 1994 in Glendale, California. Consisting of Serj Tankian (lead vocals and keyboards), Daron Malakian (vocals and guitar), Shavo Odadjian (bass), and John Dolmayan (drums), the band has released five albums since 1998. A staple on mainstream rock radio, their works have earned them four Grammy Award nominations, of which they won one.

System of a Down is very politically active (Although they prefer to call themselves a socially aware band) and are noted for the liberal political views expressed in their songs, tackling several subjects including the Armenian Genocide, War on Drugs, religion, and censorship. The band is a part of the Axis of Justice, a non-profit organization co-founded by Tankian and fellow musician Tom Morello, dedicated to bringing together musicians, music fans, and grassroots political organizations to fight for social justice.

Chris Brown named artist of the year by Billboard

10:41 PM / Posted by blacklotus / comments (0)

NEW YORK – The accolades keep coming for Chris Brown — this time, he's been named Billboard's top artist of 2008.
"It's bigger than what I can ever imagine. It's unexpected totally, so it's a surprise," Brown said in an interview Thursday.
It shouldn't be too much of a surprise for Brown. He not only nabbed the Billboard honor in 2006, he had a great '08, with solo hits like "With You" and "Forever" as well as successful collaborations, like the Jordin Sparks duet "No Air." Last month, he won three awards at the American Music Awards, including artist of the year.
But the 18-year-old Brown says he's still not used to all the accolades.
"I've had a good year but I still feel like a little insecure in those parts. I'm like, `There's little ol' me getting an award' — that's incredible," he said. The artist's rankings are determined by album sales as well as digital downloads, radio airplay and Internet streams. The No. 2 artist was Lil Wayne, who had a huge year thanks to hits like "A Milli" and "Lollipop"; No. 3 on the list was Rihanna, whose hits included "Take A Bow" and "Disturbia," which was co-written by boyfriend Brown.
Rounding out the top five were Alicia Keys and Taylor Swift.
Billboard named Flo Rida's "Low" as the year's top song, followed by Leona Lewis "Bleeding Love," Alicia Keys' "No One," Lil Wayne's "Lollipop" and "Apologize" by Timbaland featuring OneRepublic. Brown had three songs in the top 10: "With You," "Forever" and "No Air" with Sparks.
The rest of the charts are available on Billboard.com.

In-the-works video games cater to music fans

9:42 PM / Posted by blacklotus / comments (0)

DENVER (Billboard) – With more than $1 billion in sales and 50 million tracks downloaded between them -- on a base of only about 350 songs -- the "Guitar Hero" and "Rock Band" video-game franchises emerged this year as serious moneymakers for the music industry. But are they bringing in enough per track?
During a quarterly earnings call in August, Warner Music Group chairman/CEO Edgar Bronfman Jr. said he wants more money from music games like Activision's "Guitar Hero" or he'll stop licensing music. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick fired back in an interview, suggesting that labels should pay his company for promoting their music.
Next year's big-money showdown is between "Guitar Hero" and MTV Games and EA's "Rock Band," but there's plenty of action on the undercard. Among the other titles competing for music industry support and gamers' dollars are Nintendo's "Wii Music," Disney's "Ultimate Band," Acclaim's "Rockfree" and XS Games' "PopStar Guitar." The winner of this competition may be labels and artists, who will have opportunities to feature their music more prominently than they would be able to in the big two games. The Plain White T's scored an exclusive spot on "Ultimate Band," for example, while 3 Doors Down is a featured act on "PopStar Guitar."
THE PARTNERSHIP
Amazon teamed up with the makers of the hit game "Grand Theft Auto IV" to let players tag any song on the soundtrack with a virtual mobile phone used by the game's protagonist. Those who did received an e-mail with more information about the song and artist and accessed a custom playlist on Amazon where they could then purchase the track.
Almost 700,000 players tagged more than 2 million songs, according to "Grand Theft Auto IV" publisher Rockstar Games, although Amazon won't divulge how many resulted in sales. But it's the first time a console game has integrated digital music purchases, and it has given other developers plenty of ideas.
THE DARK HORSE
When Sierra Entertainment unveiled details of its "Brutal Legend," online gamer forums went crazy with excitement. But the reaction among music executives was tepid at best -- perhaps because the game isn't about music simulation but the story of a roadie sent back in time when heavy metal gods ruled the world.
Drawing heavily on Nordic mythology and metal imagery -- and featuring voice acting from the likes of actor/musician Jack Black, Motorhead's Lemmy Kilmister and heavy metal singer-songwriter Ronnie James Dio -- the game has the names and the potential soundtrack to win big among hardcore gamers and metal fans alike. The game remains in limbo, though, as Sierra Entertainment parent company Vivendi Games and Activision complete their merger.
THE BEATLES
They're not available on iTunes or any other digital music service. But the Fab Four made headlines when MTV announced that it would be making a videogame featuring the group's music, history, images and characters.
Exactly what the game will look like or do is under wraps until its release in 2009. But it's expected to be an interactive product similar to "Rock Band." And the development will lay the groundwork for ways that iconic artists like the Beatles can work with games to introduce their music to new fans and let older ones experience it in a new way.

Saosin

2:21 AM / Posted by blacklotus / comments (0)

Saosin is a five-piece band from Newport Beach, California. They formed during the summer of 2003, and are characterized by their powerful, high-pitched vocals and melodic guitar riffs. Their musical style has variously been described as post-hardcore, emo, and screamo. Anthony Green, the former vocalist, had initially suggested the name "Saosin" (pronounced as "say-ocean") for the band. after he left they changed the name to "say-oh-sin" which means caution in a different dialect in chinese[4] The name is derived from the Chinese phrase xiao xin(si au shin), The word comes from a 15th century proverb about fathers telling their sons who are being married off for money not to get emotionally involved with their wives, who could die at any time. Green explained the meaning behind this as being a reference to the fact that nothing is eternal, and that it is a mistake to become overly attached to any one thing, because that thing will eventually be lost.[5] Whilst Green's interpretation of the word xiao xin is obscure, xiao xin is generally used in Chinese as a means to express caution. Green had previously used Saosin as a track name in his high school band, Audience of One's CD, I Remember When This All Meant Something.

Freezepop (Band)

Freezepop is an indie New Wave/Synthpop band composed of Liz Enthusiasm, the Duke of Pannekoeken (originally the Duke of Candied Apples, as well as the Duke of Belgian Waffles, all three pseudonyms of Kasson Crooker), and the Other Sean T. Drinkwater (who claims to be a clone of the "original" Sean T. Drinkwater). They formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1999. The band is named after the frozen snack. The members describe their music as "sweet and cold and fruity and plastic-y", much like the snack.[1]

They have gained a number of fans through their work in video games, and several of their songs can be found on titles such as FreQuency, Amplitude, Karaoke Revolution, Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero II, Phase, Rock Band, Guitar Hero: On Tour, Flash Flash Revolution, and Downhill Domination, along with one of the North American entries in the Dance Dance Revolution series. Many of these games were developed by Harmonix, a company for which Kasson Crooker is a Senior Producer.

Behemoth

6:54 AM / Posted by blacklotus / comments (0)

Behemoth is a Polish blackened death metal band. Behemoth may at some point become banned from playing in their native country, Poland. In July 2007 the All-Polish Committee for Defense Against Sects distributed a list of bands that allegedly promote Satanism and murder to many Polish officials. Critics of this policy primarily see this as a violation of free speech, with the most scathing criticism generally eminating from within the metal community. As of present, the list has not gone into effect, and Behemoth is still allowed to play in Poland freely, but the band provoked further controversy in February 2008 when an official complaint had been registered by the committee, which cited a bible-tearing incident on behalf of frontman Nergal at a concert in September 2007.

Scared Of Bums

7:03 AM / Posted by blacklotus / comments (0)

The dynamics were complicated that influenced their trip from the change in the name of the band (initially was named Society Threat), the change in the personnel (Elel, Dekwan and Astika could progress in this group), to the expansion of the genre (from Melodic Core to Melodic Core Metal); precisely made Scared of Bums become increasingly mature and more kept threw in faced tough him the competition for Indonesian music. Slow but certain, the band that had taken the name from one of the NOFX albums, since standing in May 2003 up to now including the speaking success in the scale of Balinese music (also the Indonesian Archipelago, although not yet significant). The invitation appeared for the quartet that “not wanted to live like hobos that was frightened in bitter reality” (the expansion of the meaning from “Scared of Bums”) was recorded very quick-selling. Could be counted in each "big" agenda (especially Rock music) in Bali the name of Scared of Bums definitely including inside. The appearance of the album debut featuring was the same as the name of the band, “Scared of Bums”, more boosted up their popularity. Fans finally could sing together during their tour.

The discography of this band is unknown, yet their first single was 'boring' that you can see from my video bar.

The members are:
1. Boker (vocal,rhythm guitar)
2. Arik (bass)
3. Poglaq (lead guitar)
4. Nova (drums)
